Like getting rid of blankie

I l-o-v-e my Olympus Stylus 790 SW. And now, like a child that outgrows “blankie” I think it may be time to move on to something a bit more pro based on the amount of time I spend (wo)manhandling the camera. No joke, my Olympus is always with me – in my handbag at all times like a favorite lip gloss.

I just want the “polished look” results of some the higher end cameras that my colleagues have, like the Nikon d40 or d80. Obviously, everyone and everything seems to look better with the higher res image quality (and yes, I am vain enough to care about that). The thing is though that I’m not willing to part with any of my current camera’s features.

Whatever I move onto has to be shock and waterproof – that’s been one of the highlights of owning the 790 SW. Every weekend the camera is either dropped in the snow, taken in the pool or hot tub or simply dropped by one of my butter finger protégés (read my kids). The thing takes a beating and keeps on capturing our memories.

As for an example of why the Olympus is so fun, here’s our friend Dan, who played around with our camera while on a visit from HI. By the time he left our house, he’d already purchased his own off Best Buy and has been shooting great vid of his own.

So – what to do. Any suggestions? Anyone else love their camera so much they’d marry it? Why?

PS For more detail on the Olympus Stylus image quality, see this CNet review from September 2007 and for back up on how rugged this camera is check out last year’s USAToday review. And, for feedback from “real people” like me see these Buzillions reviews (not that reporters aren’t real people, I just consider paid consumer reviewers exceedingly more techie than, say, my dad might be. sorry dad!).

To Mom

A very happy “I owe you everything day” to my mom.

In a perfect world, this would be the news

Feeding toddlers

Does this sound familar?

Parents: We’re having quesedillas for dinner, and they’re all ready! We even have sour cream!

(expecting applause, or at the least a “mmm”)

Kid(s): I don’t like quesedillas.

Parents: You just ate one last weekend.

Kid(s): I don’t like quesedillas.

Parent(s): Grrrrrr.

15 minutes later…

Parent(s): Here’s some chicken nuggets.

Score?

Parents - One. They’re Morningstar nuggets and full of protein. Better for them than a quesedilla anyway.

Kid(s) - One and a half. We lost the battle and the 10 extra minutes to bake the nuggets. Also, they ate that for lunch.

Red Bull Recipe of the Week: The RB Smoothie

Summer is coming, and if you’re on the west coast then you’re probably already digging out your suit or trunks, or maybe your speedo if you roll like that. Since summer reminds me of milkshakes, and milkshakes turned into smoothies once I turned 30, it’s now all about the smoothie. Here’s a recipe for the upcoming summer months - courtesy of Energy Fanatics.

They have another recipe too, one with yogurt and blueberries, so if this one doesn’t float your boat then check out their other option.

Red Bull Energy Smoothie Recipe

  • 1/2 can (8.3 fl oz) of Red Bull energy drink (available sugar-free)
  • 4 fresh strawberries (sliced)
  • 1 banana (sliced into smaller pieces and frozen)
  • 1 peach (sliced into smaller pieces)
  • 1 cup of orange juice or fruit juice of your choice
  • Add ice cubes if needed

Put all the ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth, serve immediately for best taste!

Enjoy!

Haven’t posted in a month, thank you

bumble_beeIt’s May now and April went by in a blinding, toxic-yellow blur. Normally, in this situation, I would find myself apologizing for the lag between my last post and this one.  But tonight, no apologies.

It was a busy month at work, and thank goodness.

1. Because I even HAVE work. I just had a friend land a contract gig today that had been out of work for just about a full year.  So, yea, I’m thankful that work has me busy.

2. I learned a lot. I’ve been working from RedBullMom and my former blogger account,  Double Life of the Red Bull Mom, but it’s mine and minimalist on purpose. However, this past month we pushed a client live with a community site and blog and each time you do this it’s a unique and incredible learning experience. It’s great to be waist-deep in a career and still feel stimulated.

3. The people. While I obviously love my family and would love to have an infinite amount of time to spend with them, when I have to immerse myself into work I feel like I’m with my second family. The support, dedication, brainy brawn and humor chops on my trenchmates is just another reason to be thankful.

But watch out…I’m back.
